Japanese Expansion Pack Card List

The Japanese Expansion Pack is where the Pokémon TCG starts: 102 cards released October 20, 1996, three years before the English Base Set. It was printed twice, and the two runs are told apart by one mark — the No Rarity first print carries no rarity symbol at all, the later With Rarity printing does. This page lists every card with both printings priced separately, 199 printing records in all, and every one of them opens its own record with the prices, the printing notes and where to buy.

Japanese Expansion Pack at a glance

How many cards are in the Japanese Expansion Pack?

The set holds 102 cards: 69 Pokémon, 26 Trainers and 7 Energy cards, numbered 001–102. This site tracks 199 printings of them — the two runs below, as listed by PriceCharting.

What is the difference between No Rarity and With Rarity?

The Expansion Pack was printed twice. The October 1996 first run carries no rarity symbol; later printings carry one (● Common, ◆ Uncommon, ★ Rare). Nothing else about the card changes, so the mark in the bottom-right corner is the whole difference — and the reason the two printings are priced separately here. 97 of this set's printings are No Rarity, 102 carry the symbol.

What is the most valuable card in the set?

The No Rarity Charizard at $17,000 raw — the dearest printing of any card here, and the one the 1996 first run is known for. Its PSA 10 trades around $52,500. One raw copy of every printing in the set comes to $24,791.

Is this the same set as the English Base Set?

No. This is the Japanese Expansion Pack, released October 20, 1996 — Japan's first Pokémon TCG set and three years older than the English Base Set. The two are related but not the same release: the numbering differs (this set runs 001–102 with its own order) and the Japanese first print is the one without a rarity symbol. Treat a Japanese card as a different printing, not as a translation of the English one.

Prices are PriceCharting sold comps read 2026-10-28 and are per printing; card numbers, rarities, types and illustrators come from TCGdex's Japanese card data (set PMCG1). One raw copy of every printing on this page totals $24,791.
