Not a card from the retail print run: Bulbapedia records Dark Gyarados as the Prerelease promo for Team Rocket, given to players at Pokémon League for the set’s launch in April 2000, before the expansion went on sale. It carries a “PRERELEASE” stamp added over the card after printing — the wording Wizards of the Coast used for its Prerelease promos until HeartGold & SoulSilver, when an expansion logo replaced it. Bulbapedia does not record which of Dark Gyarados’s two printings (holo #8 or non-holo #25) carries the stamp. How to tell: the stamp itself — without it you have the ordinary set printing.
