Fossil Card List

Fossil is 62 cards released October 10, 1999 — the set that gave the TCG its first Dragonite and Ditto, and the last one Wizards printed on the original Starlight holofoil. Its 15 holo rares carry nearly all of the set’s value, and because it shipped after the Shadowless window there are only two printings to tell apart: 1st Edition and Unlimited. Explore the complete FO visual card list, organised by printing for easy browsing — and every card here links to its own record, with prices, variants and what to check before you buy.

Fossil at a glance

How many cards are in the Fossil set?

Fossil has 62 cards: 15 holo rares at numbers 1–15, 15 rares, 16 uncommons and 16 commons. It released in English on October 10, 1999.

What is the difference between Fossil 1st Edition and Unlimited?

The Edition 1 stamp, and nothing else. Both printings came off the same artwork and the same Starlight holofoil; the stamp sits just outside the lower-left of the illustration box on 1st Edition cards. The 1st Edition run came first and is the scarcer of the two, which is where the price gap comes from. The only other Fossil variation worth knowing is the Australian Unlimited release, which changed the lettering on the packaging — not the card.

Is there a Shadowless Fossil?

No. Shadowless is a Base Set distinction only — a Jungle or Fossil card described as Shadowless is a marketplace error describing the normal print.

Does Fossil have reverse holos?

No. Reverse-holo finishes do not appear in the Pokémon TCG until Legendary Collection in 2002.

How do I tell a 1st Edition Fossil card?

Look outside the lower-left corner of the illustration box for the Edition 1 stamp, then confirm the small fossil set symbol beside the card number. Two things to keep in mind: CGC documents three stamp positions (Pokémon, Trainer and Energy cards place it differently), so a missing stamp in one spot is not proof of absence.

What holo pattern does Fossil use?

Starlight — and Fossil is the last WotC-era set printed with it. The pattern changed to cosmos at Base Set 2 in February 2000. That makes the foil itself a test: a “Fossil” holo showing a cosmos pattern is a Base Set 2 card, not a Fossil one.

How many holo cards are in Fossil?

15 — numbers 1 to 15. The holos are the top of the set, and they are where nearly all of Fossil’s value sits; the 47 non-holos are common in both printings.

What is the most expensive Fossil card?

Gengar #5 in 1st Edition, followed by Dragonite #4. The error to know in this set is the Haunter “stain” error #6, a holo printed with an ink mark across the artwork.
