The Fossil Master Set contains 62 total cards: 15 holo rares, 15 rares, 16 uncommons, 16 commons. The Grand Master Set runs to 133 once the Unlimited printings and the 9 documented promo, prerelease and error printings are counted — and every 1st Edition printing is priced below.

Fossil · 1999The set that gave the TCG its first Dragonite and Ditto

Fossil arrived on October 10, 1999 — the third expansion, and the last one Wizards printed on the original Starlight holofoil. Sixty-two cards, fifteen of them holo rare, and because it shipped well after the Shadowless window there are only two printings to tell apart: 1st Edition and Unlimited.

None of these 9 cards are part of the 62-card Fossil Master Set — they carry a Fossil number or came out of a Fossil pack, but none of them was distributed in the ordinary way. The two Prerelease Aerodactyls were given out at League events, the W-stamp Kabuto came with Top Deck Magazine, and the Haunter, Krabby and Zapdos rows are documented print errors. Switch them on in the binder to lay them out with the set.

Your Fossil Master Set Questions, Answered

How many cards are in the Fossil Master Set?

A full Fossil Master Set contains:

15 holo rares
15 rares
16 uncommons
16 commons

Total: 62 cards — 133 once you count every Fossil printing

What counts as a complete Fossil Master Set?

A complete Fossil Master Set is the 62 numbered cards, in 1st Edition, Unlimited, or both — they are the same set, and the black “Edition 1” stamp is the only difference between them.

The two Prerelease Aerodactyls, the Top Deck W-stamp Kabuto and the documented Haunter, Krabby and Zapdos print errors are usually treated as optional additions for a Grand Master Set.

How many binder pages do I need for a Fossil Master Set?

For a 62-card Fossil Master Set you’ll need:

✔ 9-pocket binder — 7 dual-sided pages
✔ 12-pocket binder — 6 dual-sided pages

If you are aiming for the 133-printing Grand Master Set:

✔ 9-pocket binder — 15 dual-sided pages
✔ 12-pocket binder — 12 dual-sided pages

We always recommend leaving extra room: graded slabs and the Prerelease and error printings all need somewhere to go.

Are promos part of a Fossil Master Set?

In short, no. Promos are released separately from the main numbered expansion — the two Prerelease Aerodactyls were League event giveaways and the W-stamp Kabuto shipped with Top Deck Magazine, so none of them was ever a pack pull.

Many collectors still add them, along with the Haunter, Krabby and Zapdos print errors. That expanded version is often called a Grand Master Set.

How much does it cost to master Fossil?

Based on ungraded sold comps at PriceCharting, the 1st Edition Fossil Master Set totals $2,241.51 — that is every one of the 62 cards, not including promos and variants.

Prices move over time, so treat this as a current market estimate rather than a fixed checklist value. The Grand Master Set, with the Prerelease Aerodactyls and the error printings, costs noticeably more — the Prerelease Aerodactyl cosmos foil is the most valuable printing in the set.

Method. Every figure here is the ungraded market value from PriceCharting, sold-comp data, October 7, 2026 — refreshed monthly. The total is one copy of each of the 62 numbered 1st Edition cards, summed; the PSA 10 figure is unconditioned PSA 10 market values for the same 62 cards.
