Japanese VS Master Set

The Japanese VS Master Set contains 142 numbered cards: 8 holo rares, 27 uncommons, 105 commons, 1 none, 1 secret rare. Three more Energies — Metal, Darkness and Rainbow — sit outside the numbering entirely: the cards carry no collector number at all, so they are counted but never given one, for 145 printings in all. Every card exists in a single printing. Every card below is priced in that one printing.

Pokémon VS · 2001The set built around the Trainers — and the last one Japan kept to itself

Pokémon VS arrived in Japan on July 19, 2001 and was never released in English. It is a 142-card set — numbered 001/141 to 141/141, with Rocket’s Tyranitar printed 142/141 as its one secret card — built on Owner's Pokémon — Karen's Umbreon, Morty's Gengar, Lance's Charizard, Bruno's Machamp — together with the Trainer cards that made them work. Every card exists in ONE printing, so there is no 1st Edition to chase and no Unlimited to settle for.

Your Japanese VS Master Set Questions, Answered

How many cards are in the Japanese VS Master Set?

A full Japanese Pokémon VS Master Set contains 142 numbered cards, plus three unnumbered Energies.

The cards are numbered 001/141 to 141/141, and the set’s one secret card, Rocket’s Tyranitar, is printed 142/141. Below the numbering sit three Energies — Metal, Darkness and Rainbow — that the cards print with no collector number at all, so they are counted but never numbered: 145 printings in all. No card in the set has a second printing.

Was Pokémon VS ever released in English?

In short, no. Pokémon VS was a Japanese-only release, and its cards were never reprinted in an English set. That is why it has its own master set page here rather than sitting inside an English set as an extra printing.

How many binder pages do I need for a Japanese VS Master Set?

For the full 145-printing Pokémon VS Master Set you’ll need:

✔ 9-pocket binder — 17 dual-sided pages
✔ 12-pocket binder — 13 dual-sided pages

For the numbered run alone, 142 cards need 16 and 12.

Nothing else goes in the binder — the set is a single printing, so there are no variants to leave room for.

Do promos or error cards belong to Pokémon VS?

No. There is no VS promo line and no documented error printing. The only irregularity in the set is its numbering: three Energies are printed without a collector number, and they are ordinary members of the set.

How much does it cost to master Pokémon VS?

Based on ungraded sold comps at PriceCharting, the Japanese VS Master Set totals $10,862.12 — all 145 cards, the 142 numbered run and the three unnumbered Energies, in their one printing each.

Prices move over time, so treat this as a current market estimate rather than a fixed checklist value. The top of the set is Karen’s Umbreon #91, which sells for more than several of the next cards combined.

Method. Every figure here is the ungraded market value from PriceCharting, sold-comp data, October 28, 2026 — refreshed weekly. The total is one copy of each of the 142 numbered Standard cards, summed; the PSA 10 figure is unconditioned PSA 10 market values for the same 142 cards.
