Base Set Master Set
The Base Set Master Set contains 102 total cards: 16 holo rares, 16 rares, 32 uncommons, 38 commons. The Grand Master Set runs to 419 once all four English printings — Shadowless, Unlimited and the ©1999–2000 run — plus the three 1st Edition variants and the documented error cards are counted — and every 1st Edition printing is priced below.
Base Set · 1999The set that started all of it — and the only WotC set with four printings
Base Set arrived in English on January 9, 1999, and it is the set most people mean when they say “my old Pokémon cards”. A hundred and two cards, sixteen of them holo rare — and the only WotC-era set that exists in four English printings, so two copies of the same card can sit a long way apart in price and the difference is a plate change rather than a picture.

The three 1st Edition variants are the same cards and numbers printed differently: Red Cheeks Pikachu, Ghost Stamp Pikachu and Gray Stamp Rattata. Switch the printings on in the binder to lay the set out with them.
What binder does 102 cards need?
Since the Base Set 1st Edition Master Set has a total of 102 cards you’ll need:
- 9-pocket binder — 12 dual-sided pages
- 12-pocket binder — 9 dual-sided pages
Always leave extra room — graded slabs, and the Shadowless, Unlimited and ©1999–2000 printings all need somewhere to go.

Your Base Set Master Set Questions, Answered
How many cards are in the Base Set Master Set?
A full Base Set Master Set contains:
16 holo rares
16 rares
32 uncommons
38 commons
Total: 102 cards
What counts as a complete Base Set Master Set?
A complete Base Set Master Set is the 102 numbered cards, in 1st Edition, Shadowless, Unlimited, or any of the four printings — they are the same 102 cards and the same artwork.
The three 1st Edition variants (Red Cheeks Pikachu, Ghost Stamp Pikachu and Gray Stamp Rattata), the prerelease Raichu and the documented error cards are usually treated as optional additions for a Grand Master Set.
How many binder pages do I need for a Base Set Master Set?
For a 102-card Base Set Master Set you’ll need:
✔ 9-pocket binder — 12 dual-sided pages
✔ 12-pocket binder — 9 dual-sided pages
We always recommend leaving extra room: graded slabs, the variants and the error cards all need somewhere to go.
Are promos part of a Base Set Master Set?
In short, no. The named promos are released separately from the main numbered expansion — the prerelease Raichu was given out at the League, not pulled from a booster pack.
Many collectors still add it, along with the three 1st Edition variants and the error cards. That expanded version is often called a Grand Master Set.
How much does it cost to master Base Set?
Based on ungraded sold comps at PriceCharting, the 1st Edition Base Set Master Set totals $20,597.87 — that is every one of the 102 cards, not including promos and variants.
Prices move over time, so treat this as a current market estimate rather than a fixed checklist value. The graded end is where Base Set separates from every other set: the 1st Edition Charizard PSA 10 is the most valuable Pokémon card there is.
Method. Every figure here is the ungraded market value from PriceCharting, sold-comp data, October 7, 2026 — refreshed monthly. The total is one copy of each of the 102 numbered 1st Edition cards, summed; the PSA 10 figure is unconditioned PSA 10 market values for the same 102 cards.
