Japanese Trainers Magazine Promos Card List

The Pokémon Card Trainers magazine ran promo inserts from 1999 to 2001. Four are priced here — Darkness Energy and Murkrow from 1999, Misdreavus and Steelix from 2000. The run's two best-known cards, Dark Venusaur and Dark Ivysaur, are on the Game Boy page because they carry the GB symbol that ties them to Card GB2. Four more inserts — Bilingual Exeggutor, Pikachu, Smeargle and Unown — are real but unlisted by our price source, so they are named rather than given pages with invented figures. This page lists every card with its printings priced separately — 5 printing records — and every one opens its own record with the prices, the printing notes and where to buy.

Japanese Trainers Magazine Promos At a Glance

How many cards are in the Japanese Trainers Magazine Promos?

The set holds 5 cards, released 1999. This site tracks 5 printings of them (Magazine 5), each with its own record and price.

What printings does it have?

Magazine inserts: one printing each, no 1st Edition and no Unlimited run, and no collector number on the card — the number shown is the Pokédex number the price source files it by. Watch the titles: the same run is filed as “Trainer Mag Promo”, “Trainer Magazine” and plain names, which is why a single search finds only part of it. Sources: folio.fyi's Trainers Magazine entries for the enumeration; price-source naming and scans.

What is the most valuable card in the set?

Bilingual Exeggutor #103 at $388 raw, about $5,325 in PSA 10. One raw copy of every printing here totals $786.

How do these cards relate to the English printing?

No English version of these cards exists. These are Japan-only magazine giveaways; there is no English equivalent set, so these are the only printings of these cards that were ever made. They are one of just two Japanese releases of the era with no English counterpart at all.

How do I tell a Japanese Trainers Magazine Promos card apart from the English printing?

Turn it over, which is the quickest tell there is: this set predates July 2001, when Japanese cards carried the Pocket Monsters Card Game back — a design no English card ever had, against the blue Pokémon back. The back changed once, with Pokémon VS in July 2001, so the back alone dates a card to this era.

Either way, the symbol beside the number is the Japanese set's own, not the English set's.

Prices are PriceCharting sold comps read 2026-11-07 and are per printing. This set is not in TCGdex, and no structured fact source covers it, so rarity, type and illustrator are omitted rather than guessed. One raw copy of every printing on this page totals $786.
