Japanese Southern Islands Card List

The Japanese Southern Islands (サザンアイランド) is not a booster set at all: eighteen cards issued in July 1999 as two nine-card promo folders, Rainbow Island and Tropical Island, alongside the second Pokémon film. Six of the eighteen are holo. The same eighteen paintings were later used for the English release in 2001, which is a separate product at PSA with its own, much higher prices — Mew on its own is about four times the Japanese card. This page lists every card with its printings priced separately — 18 printing records — and every one opens its own record with the prices, the printing notes and where to buy.

Japanese Southern Islands At a Glance

How many cards are in the Japanese Southern Islands?

The set holds 18 cards, released July 17, 1999. This site tracks 18 printings of them (Standard 18), each with its own record and price.

What printings does it have?

Southern Islands shipped in one run: there is no 1st Edition, no reverse holo and no reprint to tell apart — one card, one printing. The Japanese cards carry no collector number, so PSA files them by Pokédex number and splits them into the Rainbow Island and Tropical Island folders.

What is the most valuable card in the set?

Mew #151 at $174 raw, about $13,528 in PSA 10. One raw copy of every printing here totals $714.

How do these cards relate to the English printing?

No English version of these cards exists. The English Southern Islands, so these are the only printings of these cards that were ever made. They are one of just two Japanese releases of the era with no English counterpart at all.

How do I tell a Japanese Southern Islands card apart from the English printing?

Turn it over, which is the quickest tell there is: this set predates July 2001, when Japanese cards carried the Pocket Monsters Card Game back — a design no English card ever had, against the blue Pokémon back. The back changed once, with Pokémon VS in July 2001, so the back alone dates a card to this era.

Either way, the symbol beside the number is the Japanese set's own, not the English set's.
