W Stamp promo. Not a print-run error: Wizards of the Coast stamped a gold foil “W” — part of its own logo — onto one card from six different expansions, seven cards in total, between September 1999 and March 2001. Wizards produced them in small numbers and most went out through Pokémon magazines rather than retail packs, which is why a stamped copy is much scarcer than the plain printing of the same card. The stamp was applied after printing, so the card underneath is the ordinary card. How to tell: the gold “W” on the face of the card; no stamp means it is the set printing, not the promo. Source: Bulbapedia, W Promotional cards (TCG). The Gym Challenge W promo. Brock's Vulpix is the single card Bulbapedia lists for this expansion with a W promo, distributed through Top Deck Magazine rather than sold in packs, which is why it turns up far less often than the ordinary print.
