Wizards Black Star Promos Master Set

The Black Star Promo line is 53 numbered cards: 53 promos. The Grand Master Set runs to 68 once the 15 documented stamp, corrected and regional printings are counted — and every numbered promo is priced below.

Black Star Promos · 1999–2002The numbered promo line — no booster packs at all

The Wizards Black Star Promos are the cards with the black star and the “PROMO” bar: 53 numbered cards, from 1/53 to 53/53, handed out between 1999 and 2002 through Leagues, magazines, cinema events and stores. None of them ever came out of a pack, which is why the numbering stops at 53 and why the stamps below are worth knowing.

These 15 cards are not extra numbers in the line — they are different printings of a promo you already have: inverted promo stamps, corrected prints, the World Collection and Pokemon Center releases. Each is documented on its own record page. Switch them on in the binder if you collect the variations.

What binder does 53 cards need?

Since the Black Star Promo line runs to 53 numbered cards you’ll need:

  • 9-pocket binder — 6 dual-sided pages
  • 12-pocket binder — 5 dual-sided pages

Always leave extra room — graded slabs and the 15 stamp and error printings all need somewhere to go.

We use the Vault X Exo-Tec 9-pocket zip binder.

Your Wizards Black Star Promos Master Set Questions, Answered

How many cards are in the Wizards Black Star Promo set?

There are 53 numbered promos, printed 1/53 to 53/53. They were released between 1999 and 2002 and never appeared in a booster pack.

Why is there no 1st Edition here?

Because there was never a booster run to stamp. The Edition 1 stamp belongs to the expansion sets; promos were distributed individually at events, by post and through magazines, so the printing distinctions that matter here are the stamps and corrections listed in the Promos band.

What are the extra printings in the Promos band?

Documented variations of promos already in the list: inverted stamp errors, corrected prints, the World Collection release and the Pokemon Center stamps. They carry the same promo number, so they sit outside the 53-card count.

How many binder pages do I need for the Black Star promos?

For the 53 numbered promos:

✔ 9-pocket binder — 6 dual-sided pages
✔ 12-pocket binder — 5 dual-sided pages

With every stamp and error printing (68 cards):

✔ 9-pocket binder — 8 dual-sided pages
✔ 12-pocket binder — 6 dual-sided pages

How much does it cost to complete the Black Star promos?

Based on ungraded sold comps at PriceCharting, the 53 numbered promos total $6,102.99.

Prices move over time, so treat this as a current market estimate rather than a fixed checklist value. The early promos — Pikachu, Mewtwo, the movie and League releases — carry most of the line’s value.
